It means you have a recirculating hood, which filters the air through a carbon cartridge and returns it to the kitchen. It reduces smell but it cannot remove smoke or heat from the room. That is how it was designed, not a fault. The carbon filter is a consumable and has to be replaced rather than washed.
Can you wash a carbon filter to save money?
No. Washing a carbon or charcoal filter ruins it — the carbon loses its ability to absorb once it is soaked. A lot of people have been told otherwise. If yours has been washed, it is no longer doing anything and needs replacing. Aluminium mesh and steel baffle filters are the washable kinds.
