Why BLDC changes the diagnosis
Most Elica chimneys sold in India today are filterless with Heat Auto Clean, and many now run a brushless DC motor with nine speeds and a motion sensor. A BLDC motor is driven by a separate controller board, and in our experience that board fails well before the motor winding does.
That matters because a dead hood is usually quoted as a motor replacement. Testing the driver first often turns a large bill into a small one, so we always test before condemning a motor.
Common Elica chimney problems
These are the Elica complaints we attend to most often in Hyderabad. On BLDC models in particular the obvious diagnosis is frequently the wrong one, so we test before quoting.
| Symptom | Most likely cause | What we do | Typical time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suction weak although the fan sounds fast | Inner cone and impeller coated with hardened oil, which the auto-clean cycle does not reach | Strip the hood, degrease the cone and impeller, flush the oil channel and duct mouth | 75–110 min |
| Hood will not start, no sound at all | On a BLDC model, a failed driver or controller board rather than the motor itself | Test and replace the driver board; replace the motor only if it has genuinely failed | 60–120 min |
| Chimney changes speed on its own | Motion sensor reading steam or a greasy lens as a hand gesture | Clean and re-calibrate the sensor lens, or replace the sensor module | 40–70 min |
| Heat Auto Clean runs but the hood is still oily | Heating element open circuit, or the cycle is run far too rarely for daily cooking | Test and replace the element, degrease by hand, set a realistic interval | 60–120 min |
| Oil dripping from the hood onto the hob | Auto oil-collection tray full or misseated, or the channel behind the cone is choked | Clear and reseat the tray, flush the channel, replace a hardened gasket | 45–75 min |
| Loud whine or vibration at high speed | Impeller out of balance from uneven oil build-up, or a worn bearing | Clean and re-balance the impeller, replace the bearing and re-grease the shaft | 60–120 min |
| Touch panel or RPM display dead | Oil ingress behind the glass onto the control board | Clean and dry the panel and board, repair the track, or replace the board | 45–90 min |
Times are for one technician at your home and exclude waiting for a spare part that has to be ordered.

How to read your Elica model number
Elica names pack the filter type, motor type, cleaning system and control type into one string, and reading it tells us which board or motor to carry. Elica publishes no official key, so the entries below are read from Elica’s own listings and Indian retail spec sheets.
| Code | What it means | Why it matters for a repair |
|---|---|---|
| 60 / 90 | Width of the hood in centimetres | Sets the canopy, glass and bracket we bring |
| FL / WDFL | Filterless — no plates; oil runs down the inner cone to a collector | The cone must be hand-stripped; running the auto-clean cycle is not a substitute |
| BLDC | A brushless DC motor, confirmed on Elica’s Pro Plus range | Changes the whole diagnosis: a dead hood is usually the driver board |
| HAC | Heat Auto Clean, the cleaning system Elica names on these models | Means a heating element that can fail on its own while the fan still runs |
| MS / VMS | Motion Sensor control — the hood responds to a hand wave | A hood changing speed by itself is almost always this sensor, not a board |
| LTW | Appears across several ranges. Elica publishes no key for it | Does not change which motor or board fits |
| SPT | Appears on the FL 900 range | No effect on spare-part selection |
| Nero | Italian for black — the finish | Matters only for replacement glass or trim |
Where to find it: on the rating sticker inside the hood, usually under the canopy or at the back near the duct outlet. On filterless models you can often read it by looking up into the cone with a torch.
Elica’s warranty, and when to claim it instead
Elica publishes some of the longest motor cover in the Indian market. The Elica Pro Plus FL BLDC HAC LTW 60 MS Nero is listed with five years onsite warranty on the product and fifteen years on the motor, covering manufacturing defects and excluding physical damage.
If your Elica is young and the motor has genuinely failed, claim it from Elica — that motor should cost you nothing. We will say so on the phone rather than send a technician out for a job you can get free.
Cover differs by model and by the dealer you bought from, so check your own invoice before assuming these figures apply to your hood.
What we handle instead
Everything the warranty leaves out: deep cleaning, oil and grease faults, a blocked or badly routed duct, installation and re-siting, lamps, sensor lenses, physical damage, and any hood past its cover.
On BLDC models there is a second reason to call us first. A hood that will not start is often the driver board, a far cheaper fix than the motor everyone assumes has died. We test the board before anything is condemned.

How an Elica service visit works
- You send the symptom. Call or send a short video of the chimney running. Sound and smoke tell us more than a description, and it lets us carry the right spare on the first visit.
- We tell you what it is likely to be. You get a probable cause and a price range before anyone travels, along with the visit charge.
- On-site diagnosis. The technician opens the hood, checks suction at the canopy, tests the driver board on BLDC models, inspects the duct and flap, then shows you the fault before quoting.
- Repair or deep clean. Work is done at your home. Floors and the hob are covered, oil-soaked parts are degreased in a tray, and old parts are handed to you.
- Test and hand over. We run every speed, check noise and suction with the kitchen door shut, clean the work area and give you a dated bill.
Full detail on charges is on the service charges page, and the areas we cover are listed under service areas.
Elica chimney questions
Do you repair Elica chimneys that are out of warranty?
Yes, and that is most of our Elica work. Once the product cover ends, Elica’s own service becomes chargeable and the wait can be long. We repair, deep clean and reinstall Elica hoods of any age, including discontinued WDFL and EFL models.
My Elica is completely dead. Is the motor gone?
On a BLDC model, usually not. Elica’s brushless motors are driven by a separate controller board, and that board fails far more often than the motor winding. We test the driver first, which frequently turns a motor replacement into a much smaller board repair.
What is Heat Auto Clean, and does it replace cleaning?
Heat Auto Clean warms the inside of the hood so hardened oil liquefies and drains into the collection tray. It keeps oil moving, but it does not clean the inner cone, the impeller blades, the motor housing or the duct. Those still coat up and still drop your suction, so an Elica needs a hand strip-down every four to six months in a Hyderabad kitchen.
How long is the Elica motor warranty?
It depends on the model. The Pro Plus FL BLDC HAC LTW 60 MS Nero is listed with five years onsite on the product and fifteen years on the motor. Older and entry models carry less. Check your invoice and the model sticker, and if the motor has failed inside that cover, claim it from Elica rather than paying us.
Why does my Elica change speed by itself?
Almost always the motion sensor. Models with MS or VMS in the name respond to a hand wave, and a lens filmed with cooking oil or a plume of steam reads as a gesture. Cleaning and re-calibrating the sensor fixes it in most cases; a failed module is a straightforward swap.
My filterless Elica has no filters to wash. What is there to clean?
More than most people expect. Oil that is not caught by a filter coats the inner cone, the impeller, the motor housing and the first stretch of duct. Emptying the oil tray clears what already drained; it does nothing for what is stuck on the way there. That build-up is the usual reason a two-year-old filterless hood pulls badly.
Do you use genuine Elica spare parts?
We use genuine parts where they are sold to independent dealers, and OEM-grade equivalents where Elica supplies only through its own network. We tell you which is going in before we fit it, show you the price, and hand you the old part.
Which areas do you cover for Elica service?
Hyderabad and Secunderabad, including Gachibowli, Kondapur, Madhapur, Kukatpally, Miyapur, Nizampet, Bachupally, Manikonda, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Mehdipatnam, Attapur, Uppal and LB Nagar. The full list is on the service areas page.
