Older installations and discontinued parts
Banjara Hills has a good number of chimneys that have been in place a long time — ten or fifteen years is common in the bungalows, sometimes longer. Those hoods are often well built, and a thorough clean can bring them back to decent working order.
The difficulty with an older hood is parts. Filters, switches, lamps and motor assemblies for discontinued models are sometimes no longer made, and a generic substitute does not always fit or perform. When we find that, we say so plainly rather than fitting something approximate: we tell you what the part is, whether it can still be sourced, and what a sensible alternative would be if it cannot.
The duct question in Banjara Hills
Both arrangements are common here. Bungalows usually have a short duct through an external wall; the older apartment blocks vent into masonry shafts that have been collecting grease for decades.
A bungalow kitchen is the easier case. The duct normally runs a short distance through an outside wall, sometimes with a decorative cowl, and the hood performs close to its rating. The two things we check are the flap, which stiffens with grease, and the cowl or mesh outside, which in older houses is often partly blocked by nesting material or paint.
The older apartment blocks are a different story. Many were built with masonry shafts rather than modern ducting, and a shaft that has served several kitchens for twenty years holds a substantial amount of deposit. We can clear the section we can reach from your flat and we can tell you honestly when the restriction is further up and belongs to the building rather than to you — that is a conversation for the association, not something to solve by replacing your motor.
Where a bungalow kitchen has been remodelled, we also look at whether the duct was rerouted during the work. A long concealed run added for the sake of the cabinetry is a frequent cause of a good hood performing badly.

My chimney is over ten years old. Is it worth repairing?
Often yes. Older hoods were frequently built solidly, and a deep clean with a new filter set can restore most of their performance. The real question is parts: if the specific filter, switch or motor for a discontinued model can no longer be sourced, repair stops being practical. We check availability before recommending anything and tell you either way.
Our building has an old masonry shaft. Can you clean it?
We can clean the section reachable from your kitchen, including the duct run and the flap. A masonry shaft shared by several flats and decades of cooking often has restriction higher up that no single flat can clear. If that is what we find, we will tell you so rather than selling you parts that cannot fix it.
