How Often Should You Clean a Kitchen Chimney?

For daily Indian cooking, wash a chimney’s filters every two to three weeks and have it professionally cleaned about every three to six months. Lighter cooking can stretch both. If your chimney’s manual gives a specific interval, follow the manual.

Cleaning schedule by filter type

Filter typeAt home, with daily cookingNotes
Baffle (steel)Wash every 2 to 4 weeksSturdy; holds a lot of oil before suction drops
Mesh or cassette (aluminium)Wash every 2 to 3 weeksClogs faster with frying; clean gently so layers do not tear
FilterlessEmpty the oil cup and wipe the inner panel regularlyMore grease reaches the fan, so professional cleaning matters
Charcoal (ductless chimneys)Not washableReplaced when used up; manuals commonly suggest every few months

On top of home washing, a professional cleaning every three to six months removes the grease on the fan and inside the hood, which filter washing cannot reach. Routine chimney servicing adds a check of the motor, controls and duct.

What makes a chimney need cleaning sooner

  • Frequent deep frying, tadka and roasting
  • Cooking two or three full meals a day, or for a large family
  • Running the chimney on low speed during heavy cooking
  • Festival weeks with a lot of frying
  • A long or bent duct that already restricts airflow

How to wash chimney filters at home

  1. Switch the chimney off at the socket and let it cool.
  2. Take out the filters as the manual shows, usually by pressing a latch.
  3. Soak them in hot water with dishwashing liquid, or a little baking soda, for 20 to 30 minutes.
  4. Scrub baffle filters with a soft brush. Treat mesh filters gently and do not twist them.
  5. Rinse with warm water and let them dry completely.
  6. Empty and wash the oil collector cup while the filters dry.
  7. Refit the filters and run the chimney to check suction.

What to avoid

  • Wire brushes and steel wool on mesh filters
  • Strong caustic cleaners on aluminium mesh, which can darken and weaken it
  • Putting filters in a dishwasher unless the manual says it is fine
  • Cooking with the filters out
  • Opening the motor housing or control panel

Signs it is time for a professional cleaning

  • Suction stays weak even with freshly washed filters
  • The chimney is noisier than it used to be or vibrates
  • Oil drips from the hood
  • It has been more than six months since the last cleaning

See what a visit includes on our chimney cleaning page. If suction stays weak after cleaning, read why chimney suction gets weak.

Auto-clean chimneys

Auto-clean models loosen oil from the fan area and drain it into an oil collector, usually when you press the auto-clean button or when an indicator comes on. Run it as the manual says and empty the cup. Auto-clean does not wash the filters, the duct or the outer hood, so those still need cleaning.

Questions about cleaning frequency

How often should chimney filters be washed?

With daily Indian cooking, every two to three weeks for mesh filters and every two to four weeks for baffle filters. Wash them sooner after heavy frying.

How often should a chimney be professionally cleaned?

About every three to six months with daily cooking, and about once a year with light cooking, unless your manual says otherwise.

Can I wash chimney filters in a dishwasher?

Only if your chimney’s manual allows it. Some steel baffle filters are dishwasher-safe, while aluminium mesh filters can discolour or weaken.
