Weak Chimney Suction: Cleaning, Duct or Motor Problem?

Weak chimney suction usually comes from one of three places: grease in the filters and fan, a duct that restricts the airflow, or a motor that has lost speed. Check them in that order. Grease is the most common cause and the only one you can fix yourself.

Four checks that narrow it down

Do these with the hob off and the chimney cool. None of them involve opening the chimney.

1. Wash the filters, refit, run on highSuction is back to normalGrease in the filters. Clean them more often.
2. With filters out and the hob off, hold a tissue under the hood on high for a few secondsStrong pull without filters, weak with them, even after washingFilters damaged, mesh layers matted, or wrong filters fitted
3. Feel the air at the outside duct opening with the chimney on highThe fan sounds normal but little air comes outDuct blocked, kinked, too long, or the outlet flap stuck
4. Switch between speeds and listenLittle change between speeds, humming, or the fan sounds slowMotor, capacitor or speed control. Needs a repair check.

These checks point you in a direction; they are not a diagnosis. Never run the chimney without filters while cooking.

Cause 1: grease in the filters and fan

Indian cooking produces a lot of fine oil: tadka, deep frying and long simmering all send oil droplets up into the chimney. Filters catch most of it, but they slowly fill up, and the oil that gets past them coats the fan blades and the inside of the hood. A greasy fan moves less air even when the motor is fine.

  • If washing the filters fixes it, wash them more often. See how often to clean a kitchen chimney.
  • If the filters are clean but the fan and inner hood are coated, that needs a deep cleaning, where the chimney is opened to clean the blower and fan.

Cause 2: the duct

A chimney can only remove air as freely as its duct lets it out. Duct problems are easy to miss because the motor sounds normal.

  • Length and bends. Every extra metre and every bend slows the air. Your manual usually gives a maximum length and number of bends; a duct that goes beyond it will never give full suction.
  • Crushed or sagging flexible pipe. Aluminium flexible duct gets dented behind cabinets or sags above false ceilings, and oil collects in the low points.
  • Narrower pipe than the chimney outlet. Reducing the diameter to fit an old wall opening chokes the airflow.
  • Stuck non-return flap. The flap at the outlet that stops outside air coming back in can stick shut with grease or dust.
  • Blocked or shared opening. A bird’s nest, clogged mesh, or an exhaust fan pushing air into the same hole.

Duct fixes range from straightening a pipe to rerouting it. A technician can check the duct during a repair visit. See what a good chimney duct run looks like.

Cause 3: the motor and controls

When the motor itself is weak, suction drops at every speed. Common reasons are a failing capacitor (the motor hums or starts slowly), worn bearings (grinding or rattling), or a fault in the speed switch or control board (some speeds missing or no difference between them). These need a repair check; do not open the motor housing yourself.

When it is not a fault at all

  • Running on low speed while frying. Tadka and frying need high speed.
  • Switching on too late. Start the chimney a few minutes before cooking so the airflow is established.
  • Chimney mounted too high above the hob, beyond the height in the manual.
  • Cross-draught. A fan or open window blowing across the hob pushes smoke away from the hood.
  • Ductless chimney. Recirculating models with charcoal filters remove smell, not smoke, so they always feel weaker than ducted ones.
  • Chimney narrower than the hob, so the outer burners are outside its reach.

Questions about weak suction

Why is my chimney suction weak after cleaning?

If clean filters did not help, the cause is further in: grease on the fan, a restricted or blocked duct, a stuck outlet flap, or a motor losing speed. A deep cleaning deals with the fan; the duct and motor need a repair check.

Can a long duct reduce chimney suction?

Yes. Every extra metre and bend slows the airflow, and a duct beyond the length and bends your manual allows will not give full suction even with a healthy motor.

Is it safe to use a chimney with weak suction?

It is not dangerous in itself, but the grease that causes it is a fire risk over time and a straining motor can overheat. Clean the filters, and book a check if suction does not recover.
